Description of Scheme

The Regional Strategic Transport Network Transport Plan (RSTN TP) 2015 includes for the improvement of the A2 Buncrana Road, Derry between the Pennyburn Roundabout and the Border.

Buncrana Road is part of the North Western Key Transport Corridor connecting Belfast to Londonderry and on to Donegal.

The Buncrana Road carries around 17,000 vehicles per day 2-way on the urban section with peak traffic approaching 1400 vehicles per hour in the pm. The busiest section of the road – Pennyburn Roundabout to Springtown Road suffers from traffic congestion and delays occurring at peak periods on every weekday. The rural section of the road carries around 14,000 vehicles per day 2-way.

The proposal would improve traffic flows on Buncrana Road by widening the 4.5 kilometres of single lane carriageway to achieve 2 traffic lanes in each direction between Pennyburn Roundabout and the border. The carriageway widening may mostly be on line but consideration is to be given to partial off-line at the eastern end of the corridor between Pennyburn Pass and Racecourse Road or Springtown Road. Part of the rural section between Skeoge Roundabout and the border may be dual carriageway.

Progress Report @ 15 April 2008

A free public exhibition of the possible routes being examined was held in the Ramada Da Vinci’s Hotel from the 1st to the 3rd April 2008. This allowed the public to examine the possible routes and to speak on a one to one basis with staff from Roads Service and their advisors. The event concluded with a public meeting giving local residents, business representatives, elected representatives and others a further opportunity to express their local knowledge, advice and concerns about the proposals. Visitors were also encouraged to register their comments and/or concerns by completing a questionnaire available at the exhibition.

April 2007 Community Consultation Event

Community consultation events provide an opportunity for the public to meet members of the design team from Roads Service and their consultants Faber Maunsell and at the same time to provide feed back to the team as the scheme develops. The first Community Consultation Event event took place on Wednesday 18 April 2007 and Thursday 19 April 2007 at the Ramada Da Vinci's Hotel, Culmore Road, Londonderry. The event was tremendously well attended and Roads Service would like to thank all those who attended and provided feedback through the comments cards.

April 2008 Community Consultation Event

Pennyburn Roundabout and Springtown Road — three possible routes were examined:

Red Route: widening the existing road to provide two lanes of traffic in each direction.
Blue Route: a new 2 lane road off-line from Pennyburn Pass to Springtown Road carrying country bound traffic and the existing Buncrana Road from Springtown Road to Pennyburn Pass carrying city bound traffic.
Purple Route: new 4 lane road off-line from Pennyburn Pass to Springtown Road, with the existing Buncrana Road from Pennyburn Pass to Springtown Road becoming a local street providing access to houses and businesses.

Springtown Road to Skeoge Roundabout — one possible was examined:

Orange Route: widening the existing road to provide two lanes of traffic in each direction.

Skeoge Roundabout to the Border — one possible route was examined:

Navy Route: online dualling by building a new carriageway alongside the existing road. Also includes a new roundabout at Elagh Business Park providing connections north east to the business park, south west to Coshquin Road and north west to the Border.
