Specific information on minor road improvement programmes in your area is available via the council reports.

Network Development Schemes

We undertake a wide range of different schemes to improve the safety and efficiency of the road network including:

  • junction improvements
  • carriageway re-alignments and
  • sightline improvements.

Traffic Management

We undertake a wide range of work to improve the safety and efficiency of the road network including:

  • new / improved traffic signals
  • new / improved traffic control systems and
  • cctv at junctions.

Collision Remedial Programme

Although most traffic collisions are caused by human error, there are some occasions when the road environment can contribute to a collision. Where we identify such locations (individual sites or routes) we implement suitable road improvements to reduce the likelilhood of further collisions.

Traffic Calming

As part of our overall startegy for improving road safety, we identify, prioritise and implement traffic calming schemes. These schemes use a range of measures to lower the speed of traffic on urban streets and so reduce the occurrence and severity of road traffic collisions.

(Further information on traffic calming is provided on an information leafletThis link will open a new window.opens in a pdf file (184KB) of the same title, also available from Roads Service offices).

Bus Priority Measures

We continuously work with Translink to identify and implement a range of measures aimed at facilitating and encouraging travel by bus. This work includes:

  • bus lanes - which gives buses priority over commuter traffic on congested routes
  • improvements to bus stops and
  • provisions of bus bays.

An information leaflet This link will open a new window.opens in a pdf file(188KB) is avaliable outlining the bus measures in the Greater Belfast Area.

Making it easier to walk

This programme recognises the importance of walking as a mode of transport and implements a range of measures such as:

  • improved pedestrian crossing facilities and
  • better access to public transport stops and stations.

The Northern Ireland Walking Action PlanThis link will open a new window.opens in a pdf file (9.4MB) was published recently which identifies a series of actions to improve conditions for walkers.
